The short answer

The voice in your head is your own brain narrating. Inner speech recruits the same speech-production machinery you use when you talk out loud, including Broca's area in the left frontal lobe, minus the final motor command that moves your lips and tongue. It is largely automatic, which is why it is so hard to switch off on demand. But it is not universal. The experience of inner speech runs from near constant to nonexistent across people, and in 2024 researchers named the low end anendophasia. Some people genuinely think without a voice at all.

You can't, can you?

You never chose to start it. You can't choose to end it. It just talks.

So who is talking, and who is listening?

There are two of you in here. A voice that narrates your whole life, and a silent something that hears it.

You've spent every second with that narrator. But the listener, the one reading this right now, you have never even met.

And some people? They have no voice at all. Just silence.

You are not the voice in your head. You are the silence that hears it.

So... is it quiet in there now?
